What is ESE / IES Exam?
Indian Engineering Services (IES) Exam also called as Engineering Services (ES) Exam is a premier competitive Examination conducted every year by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for recruitment to the Indian Engineering Services.
It is to work under the Government of India to manage a large segment of public sector economy which constitutes of Railroads, Public works, Power, Telecommunications, etc. Candidates who are selected for IES are appointed as Assistant Executive Engineers in various departments under central government for Group A and Group B posts.
All appointments to the group A services are made by the president of India. Candidates have to apply IES through online. The application fee is Rs.200/- for male category general applicants, while no fee is required by reserved category and female applicants.
ELIGIBILITY for IES Exam
AGE ELIGIBILITY:
You need to be between 21 years to 30 years on the 1st August of the year of examination. For example, for IES-2011, You should be born not earlier than 2nd August,1981 and not later than 1st August,1990. Age relaxation exist as per Govt. rules.
- AGE Limit for GENERAL UPTO 30yrs
- AGE Limit for OBC UPTO 33yrs
- AGE Limit for SC/ST UPTO 35yrs.
ACADEMIC ELIGIBLITY:
A degree in Engineering from recognized university or equivalent. Final year Engineering candidates or equivalent are also eligible.

ENGINEERING SERVICES (PRELIMS) : JANUARY
ENGINEERING SERVICES (MAINS) : JUNE
STRUCTURE AND PATTERN OF ENGINEERING SERVICE EXAMINATION:
Engineering service Examinations is of three stages:
Stage-I: Preliminary,
Stage-II: Mains,
Stage-III: Personality test.

IES EXAM STATISTICS:
You can find from above IES exam statistics that close to 30%-40% people who applies for IES exam, does not appears for the IES exam. Also majority of the screening is done at the written test - only 1.5% -3% of those who writes the exam are called for interview. However, once you are called for the interview, a chance of being finally selected is pretty good- 30%- 40%. IES is therefore considered as the toughest exam in India. Because of difficult selection procedure, IES officers carry high respect and status in society and are able to manage activities in diverse areas.
IES Exam is conducted for the streams of CIVIL, MECHANICAL, ELECTRICAL, ELECTRONICS & TELECOMMUNICATION.
